Reds Come Up Short at Philadelphia, 5-4
|
The Phillies grabbed a win, 5-4, at Veterans Stadium 1971, overcoming a fine effort from Cincinnati pitcher Doug Rau. Rau went 6.2 innings and allowed 3 runs. Jon Matlack got the win, improving to 10-5. He worked 6 innings, giving up 2 runs on 8 hits, while striking out 2 and walking 5. With the victory, the Phillies upped their record to 69-59.
Candy Maldonado, who is tied for 10th in the NL in doubles with 26, aided the Philadelphia cause with a run-scoring triple in the bottom of the fourth. For the game, the center fielder was 1 for 2 with a triple and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once.
"Credit where credit is due," said Maldonado, "this was a team win."
