The Minnesota Twins did just enough to sneak past the Texas Rangers, 5-4, at Arlington Stadium 1979. Minnesota pitcher Phil Niekro, in particular, had a standout performance. With the victory, the Twins upped their record to 86-53.
The result might have been different, had it not been for Matt Cooper, the Minnesota catcher. Cooper had a run-scoring double in the top of the eighth inning to put the Twins ahead, 5-2. For the game, Cooper had 1 double and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"Everyone's kind of edgy right now," said losing manager Zach Redpath, "but nothing a couple of wins wouldn't cure."
