Philadelphia pitcher Jim Beattie did his part in helping his team beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-3. The right-hander kept opposing batters in check throughout the game. Philadelphia now has a record of 80-65 with the win.

Lou Whitaker, who finished 5th in the NL in stolen bases with 54 in 1978, aided the Philadelphia cause with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the second. For the game, the third baseman was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once.

"Big team win," Whitaker said later.
