In a low-scoring affair between the New York Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates, pitcher Elias Sosa was the difference between victory and defeat. The New York right-hander earned accolades in the 2-1 Mets win. The winning pitcher was Sosa, now 5-6. He tossed 7.2 innings of 3-hit ball, while walking 1 and fanning 2. The loss makes Pittsburgh 18-37.

The Mets grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fourth. With no one out, Ken Singleton, who finished 4th in the NL in wins above replacement with 6.2 in 1974, hit a solo home run off Kelly Downs, putting New York in front, 2-0. For Singleton, it was his 4th home run of the season.

Singleton said the team appreciates the support from the fans. "I'm glad we could reward them with a good win," he said after the game.
