Carolina League hitters didn't have much of a chance in the 1982 season when the Peninsula manager wrote "Oil Can Boyd" on the lineup card. Outing after outing, he held teams in check and usually got a win.

He excelled with a 14-8 mark and 3.01 ERA in 24 starts, tossed 206.1 innings, fanned 159 and held opposing teams to a .234 average.

For his superb season Boyd was today named the CRL Pitcher of the Year Award winner.

He received 6 first place votes out of a possible 9. Jesus Silva of the Greensboro Hornets finished second in voting with 1 first place vote, while Johnny Abrego of the Kinston Eagles finished third.
