Gil Too Tough, Blanks Mexico City Friday, January 15th, 1982 The Managua Lagoon Monsters did little to support starter Carlos Gil against the Mexico City Conquistadors, but it turned out he didn't need the help. The right-hander spun a complete game shutout against the Conquistadors, striking out 9 and surrendering 2 hits. The performance from Gil allowed Managua to escape with the 3-0 win despite an anemic offense. "Nobody came to me and said 'Carlos, we're gonna need you to win this one for us today,' but I could feel it," Gil told BNN reporters following the win. "I'm the guy that will step up for you when you need it." Season-to-date Gil has rung up 4 wins and 7 losses in 13 appearances. He has an ERA of 5.05 and has fanned 67 batters in 73 innings.
