Mets Win to Extend Series Lead to 2-0

Tommy John pitched a gem to help the New York Mets escape with a tight 2-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in a low-scoring League Championship Series contest today. The left-handed John threw 9 innings of shutout ball in the win, just enough for the Mets on a day when their offense dried up. New York now leads the best-of-5 series 2-0.

The Reds had trouble solving John, who surrendered no earned runs on 5 hits over 9 innings.

"We put it together today and came out with the win," John said in postgame remarks. "That's the main thing."

The next game is scheduled for Monday, October 9th, 1972 at Shea Stadium in New York. Slated to start are Mickey Lolich for Cincinnati and Nolan Ryan for New York.
